Carolina Chemonstrations® for AP® Chemistry: Big Idea 2 - Chemical and Physical Properties

Item # 840342 Exclusive

Demonstrate 4 discrepant events to introduce Big Idea 2 or to review how molecular structure and intra- and intermolecular forces determine the physical and chemical properties of substances. Students observe and explain hydrogen bonding, polarity, thermal expansion, and surface tension in terms of particulate interactions. Data analysis and Big Idea questions help prepare students for the AP® Chemistry Exam. Materials are sufficient to perform the 4 demonstrations twice.

In stock and available to ship.

Introduce or review the concepts in Big Idea 2: Chemical and Physical Properties. Also suitable for general chemistry or freshman chemistry, this kit includes 4 demonstrations:

  • The Lost Volume - Focuses on a solution that deviates from ideality in that the volume change upon mixing is not zero.
  • Bending Water - A static electric charge is used to attract polar water molecules, causing a stream of water to bend.
  • Ball and Ring - Thermal expansion is explored.
  • Lycopodium Shield - Hydrophobic lycopodium forms a water-resistant shield around the presenter’s hand, keeping it dry while submerged.

Make the 6 Big Ideas of AP® Chemistry come alive with Carolina Chemonstrations® for AP® Chemistry kits. Introduce or review the concepts of:

  • Atoms
  • Chemical and Physical Properties
  • Changes in Matter
  • Reaction Rates
  • Thermodynamics
  • Equilibrium

Each engaging kit helps students understand the particle level interactions that result in dramatic observed phenomena. Multiple demonstrations in each kit give students a framework for understanding AP® Chemistry concepts and help students move from the big picture to hard science. Students demonstrate their grasp of the Big Idea concepts underlying the demo through a particle level explanation, apply their knowledge to analyze the data presented, and think critically about the topics by answering Big Idea questions. Materials in each kit are sufficient to perform each set of demos at least twice.
