Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great educational resource This product is an excellent resource to demostrate microorganisms development in soil. It is easy to use, just put the rubber stopper at one end and fill with soil, water and nutrients.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works well Initially my main concern was that the stopper would leak, but it's never leaked a drop. I built two columns (my first) at the same time, a Carolina and a home built. The main difference being I used the two supplied packets for calcium and sulfur in the Carolina tube, whereas in the other (1/2 gal plastic orange juice bottle) I improvised with egg yolk (for sulfur) and baking soda (the latter probably a mistake). After nearly six weeks I had good growth in both, but the Carolina developed much more richly with different color layered zones. A big surprise I found was this: In natural light both columns are fairly dark and drab looking, but when photographed with flash and digital camera the color intensity and variations show up very nicely.
