Witnessing metamorphosis is an experience that children never forget! This 8-oz cup comes with 5 painted lady (Vanessa cardui) butterfly larvae and their food. The larvae pupate and emerge as adult butterflies in about 30 days. At least 3 out of 5 larvae are guaranteed to emerge as healthy adult butterflies. Larvae come with care instructions.

After the adults emerge, try breeding them. All you need is the proper host plant for the adults to lay eggs on. The mallow plant (item #144042) is the painted lady's natural host. Once your new generation of caterpillars hatches, they will be hungry, and the mallow plant is the perfect source of food for them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This product has been reliable and it is sent quickly. I have purchased Painted Lady larva multiple times over the years. I work in a school and my kids love to watch the metamorphosis unfold. When my own kids were little I purchased them as well. The only thing I feel is a con is the price. It is pricey for what you get. The shipping is very high.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Enjoyed by All! I order the larvae every year and we are always pleased with the results. My students love watching them eat and grow and then wait patiently while they are in the pupa stage. Finally, they emerge and we have butterflies for a few days. Parents and siblings always come visit for updates.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Highly recommended These wonderful little critters arrived healthy and wiggling. Every caterpillar grew beautifully and created their chrysalis like clockwork, and every single butterfly emerged healthy and flying. The children had an eye opening, exciting experience. Thank you SO much!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Butterflies I got 4 sets of Painted Lady Butterflies for me and my Teacher across the hall to share. I emailed Carolina Biological because I had a few questions about some of the things the caterpillars did. I never got a response. I think if would be helpful if the larvae came with step by step here's what you will see happening. Sending us a link for the kids to watch that explains things they are seeing in the cups etc. could be helpful too. Mine questioned the balls formed by them of their food as they ate. Caring for them in detail after they hatch would be helpful too or sending/telling us exactly what to feed them would be helpful too since you recommend not releasing them into the wild. Also how to properly dispose of them once they die would be nice and helpful too. Thank you

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Painted Lady Butterflies in Kindergarten I introduced my class to the butterfly caterpillars as soon as the package arrived. This was a gathering spot for curious Kinders. Now that they have made their chrysalis my students continue to gather around the habitat with magnifying glasses to search for changes.

Address Multiple Life Science Topics

Painted lady butterflies are appropriate for all grade levels but especially effective for grades K–8. They enable students to observe complete metamorphosis, from caterpillar to chrysalis to adult butterfly. Students can then compare the butterfly life cycle to that of other animals or investigate how temperature affects insect development time. General life science topics can be addressed as well, including how form fits function and what organisms need to survive.

Committed to Quality

We are committed to producing quality, exclusive painted lady butterfly kits and cultures for educators. The hallmark of our commitment to quality is our highly trained scientific staff.
