Addresses AP® Biology Big Ideas 2, 3, and 4 and Essential Knowledge 2.C.3, 2.E.3, 3.E.1, and 3.E.3. Students determine the food preferences of Brassica butterfly larvae. Results are collected and quantified, and their significance is determined using chi-square analysis. Students then pose questions about other Brassica butterfly larvae behaviors and design an experiment to answer the questions. Materials for a class of 32 students working in groups of 4.
Observe the foraging behavior of Brassica butterfly larvae.
Students set up a choice experiment to determine the food preferences of Brassica butterfly larvae. Results are collected and quantified, and their significance is determined using chi-square analysis. Applying these techniques, students pose proximate and ultimate questions about other Brassica butterfly larvae behaviors and design an experiment to answer the questions. The 8-Station Kit includes enough materials for a class of 32 students working in groups of 4.
Note: Kit includes prepaid coupon to request perishable material later due to the need to grow the Brassica plant seeds included in kit for 5 days before receiving Brassica butterfly eggs.

With the current AP® Biology curriculum, you are no longer limited to 12 prescribed labs in your classroom—meaning you can now teach the course using labs that fit your classroom and student interests.
Carolina is proud to be the only supplier with unique kits and activities that are exclusively designed for the new AP® curriculum. Our Carolina Investigations® series is specifically aligned to the Big Ideas and Science Practices and was built from the ground up with the help of expert AP® teachers.
Focused on making inquiry easier in your classroom, Carolina Investigations® kits feature activities that allow students to take a guided approach to inquiry while building their Science Practices and connecting the Big Ideas. These kits offer an initial skill-building activity that features a more traditional classroom approach. This is followed by a secondary investigation using a unique experimental design template to help guide those student-driven, inquiry-based learning opportunities.
