Addresses AP® Biology Big Ideas 1 and 3 and Essential Knowledge 1.A.1, 1.A.2, 3.A.1, 3.C.1, and 3.C.2. Students discover and explore the process of transformation. They perform a classic transformation activity, to build background knowledge regarding plasmid function, genotype/phenotype connection, and antibiotic resistance. Using proper sterile technique, students then design an experiment to distinguish between 3 different plasmids and determine their gene function.

Description

  • Aligned with Big Ideas 1 and 3 and Essential Knowledge 1.A.1, 1.A.2, 3.A.1, 3.C.1, and 3.C.2
  • Emphasizes Science Practices 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7

Students discover and explore the process of transformation, a key technique in genetic engineering. They perform a classic transformation activity, to build background knowledge regarding plasmid function, genotype/phenotype connection, and antibiotic resistance. Using proper sterile technique and inquiry, students then design a new experiment to distinguish between 3 different plasmids and determine their gene function. This kit takes the traditional Lab 6 for AP® Biology to a new level with a unique inquiry approach and fits seamlessly into the College Board standards.

The 8-Station Kit includes enough materials for a class of 32 students working in groups of 4. The 1-Station Kit includes materials for 1 group of 4 students. The digital teacher's manual is a 12-month eBook license to the Transformation Kit teacher's manual. You can also access the digital student guide for this kit for free on Carolina Science Online®.

Note: Order the kit with the perishable materials included or with a voucher to request perishable materials later at your convenience. Kit does not have a refill because the materials are completely used during the activity.
