This is the third year that Carolina has donated Carolina’s Perfect Solution® sheep brains and classroom dissection kits to the Academy. Dr. Mat Gendle, Assistant Professor of Psychology at Elon University, leads the Elon Academy’s summer dissection lab.

“The Perfect Solution sheep brains have proven to be a wonderful resource for working with high school students,” Gendle said. “The brains are preserved and prepared with care, and several delicate features (such as the optic chiasm and brainstem) can be easily studied.

“I especially like that the preservative is safe (and can be flushed down the sink), low in odor, and keeps the specimens pliable and easy to dissect,” Gendle noted. “The disposable dissection kits are also very helpful—having everything in an inclusive package makes lab setup and cleanup much easier!”

Allan Morrison, Head of Preserved Materials at Carolina, has donated Carolina’s Perfect Solution® preserved specimens to the Elon Academy for the past 3 years.

“Our partnership with Elon University has been mutually beneficial throughout the years. We are very pleased to have the opportunity to support their hands-on dissection activities with our Carolina’s Perfect Solution® brains and help serve our local high school students during this exciting summer program,” Morrison said.

Started in 2006 by Elon University, the Elon Academy provides academically gifted, local high school students with the opportunity to enhance their education, build leadership skills, and develop a strong sense of social responsibility. The students have financial need and come from families with no history of college education.

Carolina takes a collaborative approach to learning and educational advancement and has supported science educators for more than 80 years.
