Wisconsin Fast Plants® for Fast Genetics: Observe Monohybrid Mendelian Inheritance in Just 72 Hours!
Students can observe and wonder about inheritance by looking around the room at their peers. However, understanding heredity and the link between genotype and phenotype is much more abstract. In just 72 hours, this activity gives students a concrete experience with variation in seedlings’ observable traits that are explained by Mendelian inheritance.

RNA Interference: Turning Genes Off at Will, Part I
Scientists have identified genes at an ever-accelerating pace. Identifying what the genes do has proved a far more elusive task—until the discovery of the RNA interference (RNAi) mechanism. Using RNAi, scientists can more quickly determine gene function. Follow the link below for a fascinating RNAi lab.

Puzzles Engage Students
The tables in my classroom are equipped with a huge selection of wooden and plastic science puzzles. One puzzle—"DNA"—is comprised of cubes students must position so that each side shows 4 colors. A second choice is Carolina’s DNA Puzzle Kit. Carolina’s Chromosome Simulation Set, with beads that show chromosome simulation, is yet another option to place in the tables’ green trays. When you have a few extra minutes at the end of class, puzzles can keep the students engaged. Students who solve 4 of the 5 puzzles on their desks receive prizes (e.g., a hand boiler or a drinking bird)!
