Classifying Chemical Reactions
Learning 5 basic categories of chemical reactions described in this article helps chemistry students with the essential skill of writing and balancing chemical equations—and boosts their ability to predict reaction products when only given reactants. Following protocols and using common reagents, students produce all 5 reaction types. Click below for more.

Balancing Chemical Equations
Having your students balance chemical equations aids their understanding of conservation of mass. However, understanding what occurs during the chemical processes described by those equations is a different matter. In this activity, students build models to “see” what happens on both sides of the equation. Click below to see what matters.

Global Water Experiment Modeling the Coriolis Effect
The International Year of Chemistry: The Global Water Experiment
Don’t let your students miss the December 31 deadline for participating in The Global Water Experiment, part of the 2011 International Year of Chemistry celebration. During the experiment, students study a precious natural resource—water—and can share their results with classes worldwide. Click the link below to discover how.
Modeling the Coriolis Effect
Help your students understand how the Coriolis effect influences the movement of winds and water currents across our planet. In only 15 min, this simple, inexpensive balloon activity helps students understand that effect. Click the link below to see how to accomplish this in such a short time.

Teacher 2 Teacher Tips
The Limiting Reactant in Chocolate Chip Cookies
To make limiting reactants an easier idea for students to grasp, I always start with a quick lab that involves a chocolate chip (cookie) recipe. The students have to figure out how many cookies they can make according to the given recipe and the list of supplies found in their pantry. Students must then determine which ingredient is their limiting reactant—based on what's in their pantry—and therefore, how many cookies they'll be able to make. Since this is a paper-and-pencil lab, they sit at their desks and munch on the cookies (teacher provided) while completing it. From then on, we relate our limiting-reactant problems to the chocolate chip quick lab. It seems to really help students make the connection and truly understand what is meant by the term "limiting reactant" and some of the other terms involved in this unit (e.g., actual vs theoretical yield).
