Alcohol Tolerance in Drosophila Kit (with Perishables)

Item # 171969P

Not available for purchase online. Call 800.334.5551

Students investigate the relationship among a recessive gene (Adh−), its enzyme product (alcohol dehydrogenase, ADH), and the resulting phenotype. ADH-negative mutants cannot break down the ethanol they consume, leading to intoxication and, ultimately, death from alcohol poisoning. Students make observations over a 24-hr period, requiring them to take flies home overnight. For 8 groups of up to 4 students each; requires 2–3 class periods to complete. Flies must be subcultured before beginning the activity. Kit includes: Adh- and Adh+ (wild-type) Drosophila cultures, FlyNap(r) kit, 48 culture vials and vial plugs, instant Drosophila medium, graduated pipets, Drosophila sorting brushes, and Carolina(tm) Drosophila manual. Needed but not included:100 cotton balls and 160 mL ethanol.
