Students experimentally derive the volume of hydrogen gas at ambient room temperature and pressure. Then they use this data to calculate the theoretical volume that 1 mole of hydrogen gas will occupy at standard temperature and pressure (STP). This activity requires approximately 45 minutes of class time. Value Kit includes materials for 4 classes of 30 students each working in groups of 3.
Learn about gas laws through hands-on experimentation
Students react excess hydrochloric acid with a known mass of magnesium metal, collect the resultant hydrogen gas, and use Dalton's Law of Partial Pressures and the combined gas law to calculate an experimental molar volume. This elegant procedure allows students to repeat the procedure 3 times during a class period to collect more data points and arrive at a more precise value. The activity requires approximately 45 minutes of class time. Value Kit includes materials for 4 classes of 30 students each working in groups of 3.
