Grades 612. Program 1 examines the discovery of viruses and their structure, how viruses are studied, how they infect their hosts, and how they replicate. Details are provided on the T-4 bacteriophage and retroviruses such as HIV. Program 2 focuses on bacteria and uses compelling microscopy of living bacteria to examine their structure, physiology, behavior, and the vital roles these microbes play in the biosphere. Bacteria can provide oxygen production (cyanobacteria), decomposition, nitrogen fixation, and act as parasites and as helpful symbionts. Twelve minutes of additional live observation of a variety of bacteria can be used to introduce or recap the lesson or to play as visual ambiance during laboratory work. This collection is 35 minutes long and consists of 2 programs and 12 chapters:
Program 1: The Biology of Viruses
Program 2: The Biology of Bacteria
It also includes an additional reference document for download. This schoolwide subscription gives all teachers and students affiliated with the school access to the programs for 1 year.
