This kit introduces genetic similarity and variation by evolutionary processes. Students examine the evolution of the globin gene family with 3 dynamic activities. In the first activity, students use magnetic nucleotide bases to model DNA and RNA structure. They generate a mutation in the sequence and investigate subsequent changes in the amino acid sequence. In the second activity, students focus on gene duplication by making cladograms.

A Carolina Exclusive! In the final activity, students model biotechnology techniques including restriction enzyme digestion, polymerase chain reaction, and gel electrophoresis to diagnose an individual with sickle cell anemia. This 1-Station Kit equips up to 4 students.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good and useful, but not perfect This kit has some real strong points: -it makes a strong connection between genetics and evolution -it covers many important concepts (the role of gene duplication in evolution, phylogenetic trees, mutations) in a way that encourages students to really engage -it is physically easy to implement and very easy to store It has some weak points as well: -it would be nice if there were more nucleotide magnets in each kit, since it is easy for students to run out of certain nucleotides -I'm NOT at all an expert in phylogeny (that's one reason I wanted to use this kit), but I think there may a subtle error in the way phylogeny is presented. There is an implication that some modern animals have evolved "less" than others. If there is an error, it's subtle and not something my students noticed (they were too busy concentrating on more basic concepts). In the future, I will use most of this kit but not that one little section I'm unsure about... at least until I can consult with someone who is really knowledgeable about the topic.
