Grades 9–12. Students explore types of mixtures and factors that affect solubility. In the first activity, students investigate the effects of pressure and temperature on the solubility of a gas in a liquid, identify different types of mixtures, and experiment with miscible and immiscible liquids. After determining the solubility curve of a substance, students apply what they've learned and design reusable hand warmers.

  • Experimentally determine a solubility curve
  • Explore unsaturated, saturated, and supersaturated solutions
  • Help students meet the Next Generation Science Standards Performance Expectation HS-PS1-3.: Plan and conduct an investigation to gather evidence to compare the structure of substances at the bulk scale to infer the strength of electrical forces between particles.
