Grades 9-12. These hands-on, inquiry-based laboratory activities introduce students to the periodic table through an exploration of elements and their properties. Students first investigate periodic trends, such as atomic mass, electron configuration, and oxygen bonding ratio, through guided inquiry of the periodic table. Then they use these trends and the properties of elements to design their own periodic arrangement.

Students practice the predictive nature of the table and graph periodic properties to visualize the trends of atomic radius, ionization energy, and electromagnetivity. Materials are sufficient for 32 students working in pairs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Thorough kit I bought these for my son (7th grade) because he has expressed an interest in chemistry. This kit starts out very simply by asking the students to group cards and order the cards in a group. As the activities progress, they get to chart trends in atomic radius and ionization energy, and they get to see why the periodic table is arranged as it is. I actually got to see the information "click" for him. I'm going to start using this for my freshman biology students who are struggling with chemistry.
