Students investigate periodicity by exploring and manipulating periodic table element cards. Through guided inquiry, they organize the element cards on the basis of physical and chemical properties and identify trends for atomic radius, electronegativity, and ionization energy. Finally, students investigate periodicity within the periodic table. Materials are sufficient for 30 students working in groups of 3.
Students study periodicity within the periodic table with this visual manipulative card set. The double-sided element cards contain information about elements and their properties, but do not reveal the elements’ names or atomic numbers. In the first activity, students arrange the element cards on the basis of atomic radius, atomic mass, electronegativity, first ionization energy, and reactions with oxygen and chlorine. In the second activity, students arrange the element cards on the basis of electron configuration, oxidation number, reactivity, and physical description. Students analyze the patterns found and make connections between the larger trends found on the periodic table. Materials are sufficient for 30 students working in groups of 3. Kit activities require approximately 90 min to complete.
