Grades 612. Boost smartphone sound with everyday items. Design teams transform cardboard tubes into nonelectrical devices to amplify sound. Applying knowledge of sound wave properties, teams modify designs and then compete to produce the best device to increase the volume and clarity of music or tones. Kit supports 16 design teams.
Grades 612. Not all technology plugs into the wall. Design teams must get creative to get loud as they transform a cardboard tube and items commonly found at home or school into a nonelectrical device to amplify smartphone sound. Engage and excite students as they explore how sound waves are transmitted, reflected, and amplified by different shapes and materials. Teams modify designs and then compete to produce the best device to increase the volume and clarity of music or tones. Kit supports 16 design teams. Needed per team but not supplied are a sound meter, tone generator, smartphone or MP3 player, and metric ruler. Includes instructions. Smart device apps may be used for music and tones.
Note: Scissors with a pointed end work best. Blunt scissors will not work. If pointed-end scissors are not available, then the teacher needs to have on hand at least 1 tool that can cut through thick cardboard or card stock. Student use of the tool is at the teacher’s discretion.
