Grade 2. This unit provides activities that help children connect patterns and data to the world around them. A magnetic trifold board allows investigation in a group setting before students work in pairs. Experiences with repeated additions encourage students to develop a sense of numbers (up to 500), and repeating patterns are connected through calculators, number lines, and number charts. Students compare groups of data and look at data as a whole. They use tables, Venn diagrams, simple and bar graphs, and line plots to display data they gathered by asking questions about seashells, wallpaper pieces, and other collections. Students investigate change in the length of a pencil over 5 days. Then they conduct a poll, display the data, and share their conclusions orally and in writing.
