Grades 9–12. Students explore different biotic and abiotic factors of the nitrogen cycle. Students care for 3 separate tanks containing fish, plants, and bacteria, monitoring the levels of different nitrogen ions. Students apply knowledge by constructing a complete nitrogen cycle that combines the fish, bacteria, and plants into one system.
- Create a working nitrogen cycle using living organisms
- Investigate environmental connections between fish, nitrifying bacteria, and plants
- Identify sources for nitrate, nitrogen dioxide, and ammonia in aquatic systems
