The
Understanding Cells and DNA unit includes 6 activities that guide students to an understanding of cell structure and function, and the inherited characteristics determined by DNA. Students first explore levels of organization in the human body and determine that the cell is the basic unit of life. They learn about the cell theory and the scientists who first used microscopes to study cells. Students use hand lenses and small viewing chambers to observe microorganism details through magnification. They discover the organelles of plant and animal cells through a reading selection and a 3-dimensional cell model building activity. Students also explore DNA by extracting it from strawberry cells. They conclude the unit by investigating inherited and acquired characteristics and compiling class observations of their own inherited characteristics.
