Grade 5. Students investigate patterns of movement as well as classic growing patterns such as perfect squares and triangular and rectangular patterns. They use variables to write mathematical expressions. Later in the unit students use pedometers to collect data, then display their findings graphically. Unit data displays include tally tables, line plots, bar graphs, and line graphs, which students analyze for measures of range, mean, median, and mode. Writing about mathematical thinking is an integral part of the lessons.
