Matter is everywhere on Earth. To develop students' understand-ing about what matter is, what its properties are, and how it behaves, this hands-on science unit offers a series of carefully designed inquiries divided into 3 sections:

Characteristic Properties of matter-Students investigate mass, volume, density, and heat and how they interrelate. These explorations lead to discussions on phase change and conservation of mass.
Mixtures and Solutions-Students use several samples of matter to begin an exploration of pure substances and mixtures. The remainder of the section focuses on the components of solutions and solubility.
Compounds, Elements, and Chemical Reactions-Students investigate some properties of pure substances and are introduced to the concepts of elements and compounds.
