Making their own recycled paper and altering variables that affect its properties let students experience firsthand the basic steps of all papermaking. Reading selections detail the historical progression of papermaking technology and describe modern large-scale papermaking. After observing the results from recycling several types of paper and experimenting with the various additives, the students are prepared for the final lessons. In an embedded assignment, students design the specifications for making their own recycled paper product-a greeting card, piece of stationery, or postcard-and then follow those specifications to create it.

In the unit The Technology of Paper, students explore the science of papermaking and the design process. They gain an understanding of the historical development of this renewable resource and its role in civilization. Students begin by examining and testing 6 common types of paper for various properties, including tear resistance, opacity, ink penetration, water absorption, smoothness.
