Painted lady butterflies are appropriate for all grade levels but especially effective for grades K-8. They enable students to observe complete metamorphosis, from caterpillar to chrysalis to adult butterfly. Students can then compare the butterfly life cycle to that of other animals or investigate how temperature affects insect development time. General life scence topics can be addressed as well, including how form fits function and what organisms need to survive.

Introduce your students to the world of Painted Lady Butterflies - Carolina makes raising and studying painted lady butterflies easy with our 5-larvae culture cup (#144005) and Live Painted Lady Butterfly Larvae (#144024 and #144026). We ship larvae in a clear, self-contained culture vessel so students can easily observe and measure caterpillar development.

There is no food to mix and nothing to set up. Caterpillars simply eat the medium supplied in the culture vessel until they form chrysalises. Students then hang up hte chrysalises in a Carolin™ Butterfly Sanctuary (#674291) and watch - in suspense - for the butterflies to emerge.

After the adults emerge, let your students try breeding them. All you need is the proper host (Mallow Plant, #144042) for the adults to lay eggs on. When your new generation of caterpillars hatches, we guarantee they will be hungry, And the Mallow is their perfect food source.

Our Painted Lady Culture Medium (#144040) is a unique innovation. It provides all the ready-to-use nutrition your caterpillars need to grow to chrysalises. One unit (two 8-oz. cups) feeds up to 80 larvae.

Vanessa cardui. Ideal for individual student use. Two larvae are shipped in 1-oz. rearing chambers with food. Larvae pupate and emerge as adults in about 30 days.
