Use this lab to teach: the molecular basis of heredity, DNA amplification, population genetics, Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium, and Chi-square analysis. Students relate classical genetics with molecular genetics by isolating fruit fly DNA and using it in the polymerase chain reaction to follow alleles in a mixed population of Bar and black flies.
Note:
Establish Drosophila populations 6 to 8 weeks prior to PCR procedures to ensure a mixed
population. A coupon is sent with each kit to be returned with the requested ship date for the Drosophila. Contact us or return coupon at least two weeks prior to the requested delivery date to ensure prompt arrival of materials. Kits contain perishable materials and are shipped on gel cold packs. Can be performed with hand cycling!
