The Carolina™ Volumeter/Respirometer is a unique and versatile device for measuring changes in gas volume within a closed system. Using this hands-on apparatus, students can study the metabolic rate of small plants and animals (such as crickets, mealworms, or germinating peas) by measuring the volume of oxygen consumed over time. The device can also be used to calculate rates of fermentation and photosynthesis by measuring the production of carbon dioxide and oxygen, respectively. The innovative design of the volumeter/respirometer includes side-by-side control and experimental test tubes clipped to a sturdy polymer frame. Temperature-controlled experimentation can be conducted by positioning the apparatus with the test tubes inside a 1-L beaker (not included) filled with heated or cooled water.
