Now that your students can get realistic blood-typing results without using lancets and drawing blood. That means no concerns about blood-borne disease transmission. Students follow thesame procedures used in actual blood typing. Synthetic blood also can be stored at room temperature, so you can use it whenever you need it. When you're done, the synthetic product can be easliy and safely discarded because it poses no health hazards.
Our synthetic blood has several advantages over the suppliers' products, which usually depend on chemical reactions producing insoluble salts that precipitate from solution. These products do not give visually realistic results. In actual blood typing, red blood cells form clumps (the agglutination reaction) that separate from the blood plasma. Whe nmixed with the appropriate synthetic antiserum, Carolia's synthetic blood forms clumps in the same way, for a realistic blood-typing result. It's the closest to authentic blood typing that you can get without using real blood.
Students act as blood geneticists at a medical laboratory and serve as expert witnesses in a case of disputed inheritance. Throughout the activity, they must master basic genetic concepts including multiple alleles, codominance, and the relationship of genotype to phenotype.
