Daphnia - Look into Physiology- Great for physiology and toxicity studies
- Heart and behavioral changes easy to see using a microscope
- Excellent food source for hydra and small fish
Also known as the water flea because of its jerky hopping motions, this crustacean's transparent body and large ellipsoid heart make it ideal for physiological studies. Add light, change the temperature, expose it to nicotine or alcohol - and watch the effects on heart rate. Daphnia is also a good food source for young fish. |
Grades 6–12. For 32 students. Similar to our DNA Necklace Kit (item #211138) in that students create a necklace, but with this kit, a living Daphnia magna is captured and worn! Students then use the remaining culture to study basic Daphnia anatomy.
Kit contains 2 Daphnia magna cultures, 4 tubes of live algae for feeding, cups, tubes, pipets, yarn, complete instructions with extension ideas, and reproducible student sheets.
Note: Springwater, microscopes, and microscope slides are needed but not included.
