Carolina Teacher Tips - Caring for Your Aquarium Snails
Follow the same acclimation procedures with your aquarium as you would with fish. Springwater or conditioned tap water needs to be prepared prior to the snails arrival if they are going to be introduced into a new tank. Some general guidelines for aquarium snail care include the following:
Try to keep the aquarium temperature fairly constant. Snails can become stressed with fluctuating temperatures.
An acceptable temperature range is between 18-25°C;. The pH range should be between 6.5 - 7.8.
Avoid overcrowding the snails. Don't hold more than 15-20 small snails per 1-2 gallons of water.
If a snail is floating, it is not necessarily dead. It may have a gas bubble trapped under its shell; it should eventually sink again.
Snails are very sensitive to metal ions, particularly copper, in water. If your school is less than 3 years old, or if there have been recent, major plumbing repairs at your school, we suggest you use bottled springwater in your aquarium.
Snails are scavengers. If the snails are kept in an aquarium with fish and plants, they should not need extra food. If there is not enough food for them, they may eat aquarium plants.
Newly arrived snails often do not move for 2-3 days following the arrival. Do not assume that your snails are dead if they are not moving; simply give them time to emerge. A dead snail will hang limply out of its shell and exudes a foul odor.
