Add water, set in a window, and observe. The preplanted fern spores germinate and produce the microscopic filamentous stage (1-dimensional growth) in 2 to 3 weeks.
The heart-shaped (2-dimensional growth) prothallia are obvious in 4 to 6 weeks, and sporophytes occur in 10 to 12 weeks.
