Here is an engaging way to assess your students' understanding of the basic principles of Mendelian genetics and the concepts of inheritance. Students examine 3-day-old plants to study 2 phenotypes allowing you to do one assessment of their understanding. Using petri dishes and filter papers, students sow seeds for 3-day-old P₁ and F₁ generation plants. Observations are made and a hypothesis formed about the phenotype of the F₂ generation. F₂ seeds are then sown to test the hypothesis, along with the P₂ seeds, to help students understand the results. Activities in this kit can be completed in 3 class periods.
