Your class might have trouble believing it, but these ferocious-looking creatures are actually quite shy - they can even be handled. These insects are originally from the Isle of Madagascar. When disturbed, they hiss loudly by forcefully expelling air through their spiracles. Their large carapaces have false eyespot protrusions that give the roaches their fierce appearance. Once they become accustomed to being handled, they no longer hiss. If you leave them alone for a few weeks, they begin to hiss again. Adult.
