Identifying an Unknown Acid AP Chemistry Kit
Identifying an Unknown Acid AP Chemistry Kit
Meets AP® Chemistry Topics 6, 7, and 10.
Students standardize a solution of sodium hydroxide and use it to titrate a solution of an unknown polyprotic acid. Students plot a titration curve and use it to determine the first 2 acid dissociation constants and molecular weight of the unknown acid. From their analysis, students identify the unknown acid from a list of polyprotic acids. This advanced experiment demonstrates the relationship between mass, moles, and stoichiometry; and builds strong problem-solving skills. Materials are sufficient for 30 students working in pairs. Materials needed, but not supplied, include pH sensors. probeware.
