Try this experiment and you will never teach reaction rates the same way again. Each demonstration shows the dramatic effect of surface area on reaction rate in a spectacular way. With each step, you disperse more powder into the air and create increasingly larger explosions, culminating in the power of the Exploding Can. It's the one experiment your students will not forget.
- Fireproof Powder - Hold a lit match against the combustible powder. It is difficult to light the powder and, once lit, burns out almost immediately. Will the powder burn?
- Dragon's Breath - Disperse the powder over a flame and watch it create a stream of flame.
- Towering Inferno - Disperse the powder in a can and watch how high the flame shoots.
- Exploding Can - Cover the can and disperse the powder again. The lid blows off the can immediately, followed by a column of flame.
The results may suprise you! Materials are sufficient for 5 demonstrations.
