Students extract salicylic acid from willow tree bark and synthesize acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) from the extract. Using a simple qualitative test, they check for the presence of salicylic acid in their aspirin and commercial aspirin from home. Materials are sufficient for 30 students working in pairs. Materials needed but not supplied include 15 Chemplates® (item# 840690).
