- Develop a heating curve to show different phases of water
- Investigate the effects of pressure and temperature on water
- Design and conduct a separation experiment
Grades 9–12. This hands-on kit uses a guided-inquiry technique as students work together to experimentally produce partial heat curves and phase diagrams for water. Through these activities students develop an understanding of the states of matter and investigate the effect of pressure and temperature on water. As a final activity, students are challenged to develop and perform a protocol for purifying glycerol from a mixture of glycerol and water, plus they develop a protocol for demonstrating the relative purity of the glycerol.
Part of the Inquiries in Science™ series. Materials are sufficient for 30 students working in groups of 3.
