- Determine the percentage composition of a substance
- Use models to differentiate between empirical and molecular formulas
- Calculate empirical and molecular formulas
Grades 9–12. Students determine the chemical composition of common substances. They begin by using molecular models to explore the similarities and differences between empirical and molecular formulas. After determining the empirical formula of a substance, they use this information to establish its molecular formula and percentage composition. Finally, students design experiments to determine the percentage composition and/or molecular and empirical formulas for common substances.
Part of the Inquiries in Science™ series. Materials are sufficient for 30 students working in groups of 3.
