- Determine the freezing-point depression of ionic and molecular substances
- Graph freezing-point curves
- Determine the van’t Hoff factors of an unknown substance
A Carolina Exclusive! Grades 9–12. Students determine how freezing points of solvents can be depressed by the addition of nonvolatile solutes. Next, they determine the molar mass of an unknown compound as well as the freezing point and solidification point of an ice-cream solution. Students then use this knowledge to design and test a prototype for a “personal” ice-cream freezer.
Part of the Inquiries in Science™ series. Materials are sufficient for 30 students working in groups of 3.
