The models consist of pieces with powerful magnets embedded in the atom centers. Using magnetism as a model for electric charge, students see and feel the attraction between opposite "charges" (magnetic poles) and repulsion between like "charges" (magnetic poles) that occurs within and between molecules.
Students learn firsthand how these fundamental interactions determine the unique chemical and physical properties of substances, such as polarity, hydrogen bonding, surface tension and crystal structure. Students can even construct structurally accurate ice cubes and snowflakes.
Each kit contains 12 water molecules, one sodium ion, one chloride ion, one ethane molecule (with one removable hydrogen), and one hydroxyl group packaged in a durable plastic cup for storage.
