In this Science Buddies science project, you’ll sequence part of the chloroplast genome from a local native plant in order to determine what other species of plants the native plant is most closely related to. You can customize this kit to include the agarose, loading dye, ethidium bromide, UV protection goggles, and other supplies needed to complete this experiment.

Native plants are important for both ecological and medicinal reasons. However, most native plants are not very well studied. One way to know more about these plants is to understand which other species of plants they are most closely related to. In this science project you will sequence part of the chloroplast genome from a native plant and use this information to determine its evolutionary relationship to other species of plants. If the plant you chose has not been sequenced before, you can contribute your data to GenBank—the public gene sequence data bank—for scientists worldwide to see and use!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Googles at Great Price Nice fitting goggles with vents that allow for air flow. I just hope the lenses do not scratch and the straps do not come off like the last ones we purchased.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy to use and store The gloves come in a small box which is great for storing large amounts between use but several students have had gloved rip during use which is problematic. However, I'm not sure if the fault lies with the gloved or with the students.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from works good we used this by pouring it into a small tupperware up to a level that covered the agarose gel (with PCR product) & it stained well. We were able to reuse the bath by keeping it dark.
