In this Science Buddies science project, you’ll establish a culture of Physarum polycephalum and determine if it can find the shortest distance between two food sources in a maze. You can customize this kit to include the Physarum culture kit, forceps, heat-resistant gloves, and other supplies needed to complete this experiment.

Can a simple organism that lives off of dead trees and that grows as a mass of protoplasm actually have intelligence? The goal of this science fair project is to test the ability of the slime mold Physarum polycephalum to solve the problem of finding the shortest path through a maze.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good but..... This kit doesn't come with instructions and it should come with more safety procedures. It was hard to do the work with no procedures for the kit but overall it's good.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Major complications with growing the organism. For some odd reason - despite prior research, careful handling of the organism (especially paying attention to processes of sterilization, as well as controlling humidity and light), directly following the instructions in the packet, and trying out all sorts of different methods after days without results - the slime mold would not grow, not even a millimeter in a few weeks time. The instructions claimed that the sclerotia would detach from their paper within 16h, but even that did not happen with any one piece of sclerotia in 2 weeks! It is possible that during the shipping of the packet to Europe, something had happened to the sclerotia. This is very disappointing, as conducting experiments with this particular creature is a part of my high school diploma, and I am supposed to finish my experiments by the end of the summer holidays. I am in a hurry, but the slime mold from Carolina has decided it does not want to cooperate at all.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lets have fun Son is home schooled so this was an easy learning experience for all. During the first attempt we managed to grow some type of black and gray scary looking mold. During the second attempt the product turn out textbook perfect with lots of cool slime mold. Product package gives enough materials for a whole classroom so we got to try growing it in the attic, the basement, the laundry room, and even his sisters room (away at college). It is amazing the different results. Now we even notice it growing in the backyard. Highly recommend for those looking for something fun and easy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality Product with Everything Included I purchased the physarum culture kit for a 7th-grade science project. My son researched the experiment design prior to ordering (and I highly recommend prior research); thus he was able to start soon after the culture kit arrived. The slime mold kit included everything he needed for the experiment and more. The kit was well-packaged with all parts clearly labeled. I appreciate that this quality product was available for his individual use. I am not a scientist, and the only surprise was the agar melting--very time consuming. My son truly enjoyed the experiment. During the experiment, my son stated, "This slime mold thing is really fun!" Adult supervision was important in this project. My son and I spent quality time together as I helped him with the project. Thanks for the opportunity; my son felt like a "real scientist."

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A lot to use My son is conducting a science fair experiment that requires slime mold. This kit had all of the required components to culture the little beasts. However, the instructions were not very parent-friendly. The kit was obviously focused to a school science teacher with a classroom of kids and some experience in this area. It would be very helpful if the instructions were written so that they referenced the components by a code, either color or alpha/numeric. Also, it would be nice if the kit was smaller. We didn’t need a class room volume, we only required but half of what we had to buy. This all being said, the kit worked great, good quality and successful, and we have the beasts we need. This was like two science fair projects in one.
