Fill the tensiometer with water and place in the soil. If the soil is dry, water flows out of the tube through the ceramic holes by diffusion, and a slight vacuum is created in the tensiometer. When the soil is moist, the vacuum in the tensiometer pulls water into the tensiometer, and the vacuum decreases. This is why soil moisture is measured in pressure level. Primarily used for experiments in biology and environmental science.
