Physarum polycephalum is a plasmodial slime mold. The plasmodium is the active feeding stage of the organism. If the plasmodium dries during feeding, it forms a crusted, resting stage called the sclerotium, which we ship in a small box. The sclerotium remains dormant until favorable conditions return, then the plasmodium emerges and proceeds to feed.

Optimal medium: 2% Agar with Old Fashioned Quaker® Oats. Optimal growth temperature: 25° C. Culture contains enough material for a class of 30 students.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Product did not meet expectations Even though I followed the directions exactly, none of my sclerotium papers managed to enter the plasmodial stage. As the directions instructed, I placed the sclerotium papers face down onto a barely damp filter paper inside of a container and placed them in a dark closet. The instructions that were included with the product stated that the samples would re-enter its active stage in 8-16 hours; however even after at least a week of care and observation, none of the samples entered the plasmodial state. I had very high hopes for this product and for Carolina Biological as my teacher had recommended this company for great service. But I'm very sad to say that I was let down.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from All pieces grew excellent product. nice big pieces, can be cut up to make more. All grew nicely, comes with oats for food. This is a very easy organism to use in the classroom, especially for student led investigations. You can even make your slime mold go dormant (create a sclerotia) to cut up and use another time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great features a good way of starting a slime mould culture. Since the sclerotium is not very perishable it is very convenient if you want to store it for long periods.
