Grades 6–10. Studying the Development and Reproduction of Organisms gives students the opportunity to perform thought-provoking, hands-on activities using organisms from 2 of the most important taxonomic groups: plants and animals. Although students study several representative organisms, the unit focuses on the life cycles and processes of 2 in particular—Wisconsin Fast Plants® and the cabbage white butterfly.

The 5-Class Unit Kit comes with a Teacher’s Edition, a Teacher’s Tools CD-ROM (item #977107), teacher access to Carolinascienceonline.com, 16 reusable hardbound Student Guides (item #977103), student eBook access, and the materials needed for a teacher to teach up to 5 classes of 32 students per day.

  • Completes hands-on activities with lower levels of student disruptions, allowing teachers to summarize the results and meaning of the activities
  • Supports STEM initiatives as students work to develop 21st-century skills in science, math, technology, and engineering to prepare for careers in the global marketplace
  • Fosters a positive attitude toward science

STC-Secondary™ is a 16-unit, inquiry-centered middle school science curriculum developed by the Smithsonian Science Education Center (SSEC), an organization of the Smithsonian Institution. Each STC-Secondary™ unit provides opportunities for students to experience scientific phenomena firsthand. A comprehensive, research-based curriculum, STC-Secondary™ is aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards.

Each lesson in Studying the Development and Reproduction of Organisms builds on skills and concepts presented in previous lessons. The unit begins with an assessment of students’ current understanding of the topic and ends with performance-based and written assessments. As students progress through the module, they take greater responsibility for their own learning, eventually planning and conducting their own procedures, devising their own data tables, and analyzing the results they obtain.
