6-12

Middle/High School

This demonstration illustrates phase changes in general as well as sublimation. Students observe changes between solid, liquid, and gaseous forms of carbon dioxide. You can also use this demonstration to discuss triple point, a specific point of pressure and temperature at which all 3 states of matter of a particular chemical substance exist in equilibrium. The activity supports 3-dimensional learning and builds toward the following:

  • NGSS Scientific and Engineering Practices: Construct Explanations
  • NGSS Core Ideas: Physical Science 1: Matter and Its Interactions
