Grade 3 and up. This is a fun introduction to the world of insect pheromones. Termites use chemicals to mark their trails, but can they be fooled? Using worker termites and various ink pens, students test the reaction of termites to chemicals that mimic those of their natural pheromones. By placing the termites near the prepared trail lines, students observe scent preferences, the insects' agility in maneuvering sharp angles, and their ability to pick up the scent of a lost trail.

Kit contains enough materials for up to 30 students working in pairs (including about 100 termites) and teacher’s manual with reproducible student guide. Note: Due to termites' natural life cycle, they are often fragile in early fall and may not ship well.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from the lab has great potential I thought the lab had great potential but was not overly impressed with the written portion of the lab.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this engaging experiment We held an orientation night to welcome and introduce the incoming freshmen to the high school. I bought this kit to introduce seventh and eighth grade students to the science practices. They had so much fun and did not realize they were doing science until I began asking questions. They were so engaged that even when the questions were challenging, they persevered because they wanted to know the answers too. So much fun. When surveyed, they all talked about this experiment as their favorite part of the experience. :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from staff development; science notebooks I used this with a group of teachers to explore literacy in science and using double entry science notebooks. It was engaging, thought-provoking, and made for a great way to model inquiry with students.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Favorite Inquiry Lab I was first introduced to this lab in college as an undergrad student. Right then I promised myself that I would incorporate it into my own classroom someday. My students have a blast trying to figure out why the termite follows the line. I highly recommend this lab!
