With activities and principles based on the Genetics of Drosophila Kit (item #746530), this kit uses Wisconsin Fast Plants® materials to help students explore Mendelian genetics and such concepts as segregation, independent assortment, inheritance of unit characters, and dominance. Students grow and pollinate F1 hybrid plants to produce F2 progeny, segregating for 1 or 2 mutant traits. Extensions include the study of maternal inheritance. Experiment time is 55 to 100 days. Kit provides materials for a class of 32 students, plus teacher instructions and reproducible student sheets. The Replacement Set replaces consumed items.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Very Good Genetics Lab I used this kit for my genetics class that involved juniors and seniors. We were able to do experiments after the manner of those done by Gregor Mendel. Students looked forward to caring for their plants and then fertilizing them to obtain an F1 generation. Plants of the F1 generation were reasonably easy to identify and count. We applied some simple statistics (the student t) to determine the significance of our results. This kit lends itself to doing real science and is something our students enjoyed doing. It is very helpful in understanding the work done by Mendel. If you use this kit you will need a lighting system. We found the cool fluorescent bulb system with the 6 tubular bulbs to be effective. The lighting system is easy to put together.
