Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good experiment over multiple days The advanced bacterial conjugation kit is a good demonstration on how bacteria can share genetic information via plasmids. I buy a new E coli strain I and II every year since sometimes the strains lose their characteristics when they are passed from plate to plate. Since the activity is spread over multiple days, the concept can be taught over multiple days as well. With the inclusion of the naldixic acid resistance, the understanding of experiment design and an effective control is also an important concept to convey to students. Though we always want to conjugation to work, sometimes one of the strains shows resistance to both antibiotics. In that case, this experiment also lends itself to discussion unexpected results and their causes.
