An eye-catching example of the genetic basis of inheritance

  • Green color is clearly visible in normal classroom light
  • No UV lighting needed
  • Pre-aliquoted and prepared reagents minimize teacher prep time
Designed to match traditional AP® Biology Lab 6. Open your students’ eyes to the genetic basis of inheritance with this simple lab. Developed in cooperation with the DNA Learning Center, this kit clearly demonstrates the induced uptake of a jellyfish gene by E. coli. Students observe the phenotypic effect of adding the gene for GFP (green fluorescent protein). GFP is expressed on plain LB—no color development substrate or induction reagent is needed. Your students can easily view the “green” effects in normal classroom lighting. Colonies will fluoresce under UV light. The plasmid containing the GFP gene also contains an ampicillin resistance gene, so ampicillin can be used to select for transformants. Lab procedure is easy to follow. The Teacher Demonstration Kit includes enough materials for ????. Includes prepaid coupon to request perishable materials later at your convenience.

Great Buy This product produces great results! All of the plates worked without any hitches. Only catch- the materials don't explain what a plasmid is and what markers are on them that allow this experiment to occur. Make sure you prep your class on transformations beforehand. April 19, 2010
Great Project I teach a supplemental high school science class for a federal education program. I was attracted to this project because it is very engaging (what could be more cool for students than transforming bacteria to glow in the dark?) and can be used to reinforce many concepts. It is a great project for the investment. November 16, 2009
Clear, Concise, Understandable Doing research, I have run many transformation experiments - used many kits - had many failures. The kit provided by Carolina is easy for students to follow and they always obtain appropriate results. The kit is sensitive enough that they need to complete the steps in order, however it allows for small errors that produce usable results. I have been very pleased with the Carolina kit! great green gene kit A good demonstration of transformation, very well designed and put together. More than enough material to pour plates. The only problem I have found is the melting of the agar; I have tried both microwave and hot water bath, and it's always difficult to completely melt the stuff. This step takes well over the time estimated on the instructions. I still end up having some plates with a lump of unmelted agar. February 9, 2009

DNA Learning Center

Cutting Edge Science in your Classroom

Carolina Biological and the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory's DNA Learning Center (DNALC) have partnered together since 1986 to make molecular genetics and biotechnology more accessible to students globally. Focused on creating innovative classroom activities that give students the opportunity to go hands-on with DNA and explore the core principles of genetics. Together we have constantly worked to increase the accessibility of many key scientific breakthroughs for classrooms globally, including such techniques as PCR, DNA Sequencing, and RNAi.

Bringing a Carolina and DNALC kit into your classroom introduces your students to the experience of scientific research on its highest level, in some cases Nobel Prize winning research, with ease and simplicity. Each kit features in-depth background information, classroom tested protocols, pre-packaged materials, and the knowledgeable technical support of the Carolina Biological team. Our wide selection of kits in this series offers educators' unmatched opportunities to bring biotechnology or genetics into their classroom, with a best in class product.

At Carolina, we believe that innovative research doesn't just belong in a lab—it belongs in your classroom.

About the DNA Learning Center

The DNA Learning Center (DNALC) is the world's first science center devoted entirely to genetics education and is an operating unit of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, an important center for molecular genetics research. The mission of the DNA Learning Center is to prepare students and families to thrive in the gene age. We envision a day when all elementary students are exposed to principles of genetics and disease risk; when all high school students have the opportunity to do hands-on experiments with DNA; and when all families have access to genetic information they need to make informed health care choices.
