Overview

This kit is great for teaching:

  • The molecular basis of heredity
  • The relationship between genes and proteins
  • How E. coli is used to engineer proteins useful in medicine and manufacturing
The lab is set up in 3 modules that can be purchased separately and used in conjunction with one another.
Module 1, the Green Gene Colony Transformation Kit, is necessary for creating the GFP-expressing bacteria used in the protein purification exercise in Module 2.
Module 2 contains all the reagents and instructions necessary for purifying GFP from E. coli.
Module 3 contains the acrylamide gels and other electrophoresis reagents necessary for electrophoretic analysis of the purified GFP. The 3rd module is optional but increases the teaching value of the lab.

Great Buy This product produces great results! All of the plates worked without any hitches. Only catch- the materials don't explain what a plasmid is and what markers are on them that allow this experiment to occur. Make sure you prep your class on transformations beforehand. April 19, 2010
Great Project I teach a supplemental high school science class for a federal education program. I was attracted to this project because it is very engaging (what could be more cool for students than transforming bacteria to glow in the dark?) and can be used to reinforce many concepts. Clear, Concise, Understandable Doing research, I have run many transformation experiments - used many kits - had many failures. The kit provided by Carolina is easy for students to follow and they always obtain appropriate results. The kit is sensitive enough that they need to complete the steps in order, however it allows for small errors that produce usable results. I have been very pleased with the Carolina kit! great green gene kit A good demonstration of transformation, very well designed and put together. More than enough material to pour plates. The only problem I have found is the melting of the agar; I have tried both microwave and hot water bath, and it's always difficult to completely melt the stuff. This step takes well over the time estimated on the instructions. I still end up having some plates with a lump of unmelted agar. February 9, 2009
