Known as the Siamese fighting fish, the male betta has been used extensively in behavioral studies. Males are brightly colored with long, flowing fins. The female is not as brightly colored and has smaller fins. Male bettas will fight other male bettas and therefore must be kept separate. Given adequate space, more than 1 female can be kept in a tank together. Care instructions included.

Tropical fish such as bettas, gouramis, chinese algae eaters, guppies, plecostomus, and algae-eating shrimp are excellent choices for the classroom aquarium. All of our tropical species are hand-selected for size and health, so you can enjoy them for years to come. Aquaria for these fish require a heater to maintain proper water temperature (75 to 80° F).

Living Organism Care Information

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great pet, with Adult supervision Bettas are notorious for people thinking they can live in bowls. No fish can live in a bowl due to ammonia/chlorine/waste buildup that can kill any fish. I'm not saying Carolina suggests this, I just wanted to make a note of it. Bettas are beautiful. A male betta can be housed singly in an aquarium of 5,10, or 20 gallons. (so can a female but not with a male) A slow moving filter and lots of live plants are needed, but also ample space as to not injure the long fins on any sharp decor. They get along with certain peaceful fish, like the albino cory catfish. They like temps of about 78F. Like any other tropical fish water quality must be excellent. males blow bubble nests. Bettas can live about 5 years. They will eat betta pellets, frozen brine shrimp, frozen dapnia cubes, frozen bloodworm cubes. A bettas stomach is the size of their eye, so dont overfeed! Constipated bettas should be fed daphnia or a tiny piece of de-shelled pea.
