Genus and Species: Pyrocystis sp.
Optimal Medium: Bioluminescent Dinoflagellate
Optimal Temperature: 22° C
Optimal Light: High (200 to 400 foot-candles)
Motility: Flagellum
Classification: Dinoflagellates

In stock and available to ship.

Pyrocystis sp. Bioluminescence can be observed in this mixture of marine dinoflagellates. These dinoflagellates begin to glow when agitated and are common in tropical waters. Their bioluminescence is an unusual defense mechanism and provides a great opportunity to discuss animal adaptations.

Each unialgal culture contains 30 mL of material. This culture requires a high light level of 200 to 400 foot-candles of fluorescent light 18 to 24" from the culture in 12-hr cycles. Optimal medium: Bioluminescent Dinoflagellate (item #153757). Optimum growth temperature: 22° C. Each order of algae includes a FREE Carolina® Culturing Algae manual.

Note: Bioluminescent dinoflagellates may not bioluminesce upon arrival; they may need a week or more to recover bioluminescent ability after being shipped. See "Carolina® CareSheet: Bioluminescent Dinoflagellates" (on the Resources tab) for more information.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So Cool! I ordered these for my science fair project and they came within a few days. They were packaged well, with plenty of protective covering. The dinos have been doing really well, and they responded to the lamp setup over a few days. So happy I got them!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Alive and Glowing My son received a Dino Pet (Google it) last year for Christmas but the gift giver didn't realize that the dinos were alive and were perishable. That company went out of business before we could get a replacement and my son was very disappointed. A Google search brought me to Carolina Biological where I found that dinoflagellates could be purchased at a reasonable price. The shipping was more than I expected but worth it because they arrived very quickly and most importantly, ALIVE! I put the dinos in a jar and setup a 12hr timer for a florescent light to build their circadian rhythm. Even after two days, the dinos lit up when stimulated! It has been about two full weeks now and they glow a brilliant blue with moderate to heavy stimulation. Even just a light flick of their container produces small bursts of light that look like little stars in a jar.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I think they're dying The dinos' luminescence has gotten worse since I bought them, not better. I bought two samples a few weeks ago and never got the full bodied blue as shown in the photo, which I assume was taken with a slow motion camera or phone since light is very transient. Well last couple of days the dinos were only lighting up about 5% of my Erlenmeyer flask as thin streaks with Carolina medium in it as before. I contacted support and they said if there is ANY luminescence it's ok, even though my flask looks nothing like the ad's photo. This morning there was absolutely no luminescence upon shaking. Disappointed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good dinos The bioluminescence is not only short lived and the dinos take a while to grow. But when they do, the results in the dark are quite good.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Didn't glow I did my best to follow all the enclosed instructions to make my flagellates glow, but I'd say on a scale of 1-10, they only got up to a 2. Very disappointed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from They are alive and bioluminescent I bought this for my daughter’s HS science fair project. I bought 4 jars. They arrived in Boston in 0 degree weather and to our relief they were packed warmly with heat packs. I did track the package and was home to accept it. We followed directions to reset the 12 hour dark/light cycle and waited a week for them to readjust. They did and are bioluminescent. We just ordered the medium to add to keep them healthy since now we want to keep them as a pet. By the way my daughter’s project placed 3rd in the HS STEM show. Was able to photograph them with an iPhone and gauge their luminescence with a $25 light meter. Have fun with your dinos.
